Brethren who have passed to the Grand Lodge above
We remember with affection those Brethren who have practised the Craft, shaped our Province and who have now passed to the Grand Lodge above. Sadly, Brethren have passed on since we began our online database in 2004.

Please report to the webmaster any omissions or inaccuracies found in these records.

Henry  Steele , PPrJGD on 08 January 2007
St. Bega Lodge No.8796
Henry was the second WM of St. Bega Lodge. He will be remembered as a quite perfect gentleman & a good mason who became a Past Provincial Junior Grand Warden. He had a long 'journey' - born 90 years ago he lived two doors up from our Lodge (The Hodgetts) in Finkle Street he married Olive and had one son Jeff before the war. He worked at Abbey Farm was a member of the Territorial Army called up at the outbreak of War in 1939. Unfortunately he was captured at Dunkirk and had the infamous 'long walk' to Poland and captivity. He was freed at the end of the War and came back to Cumbria where he was the milkman for Disington for a few years. He then came back to St. Bees and eventually became the Post Master at the St. Bees Post Office. It was during this time in the early 70s that along with W. Bros. Bill Ferguson Rowland West and Bro. William Bramwell that they decided to set up a Masonic Lodge in St. Bees and after a long struggle succeeded. When his son Jeff took over the Post Office Henry and Olive retired to the Crofts but unfortunately Olive developed Alzheimers and went into a home. Henry went most days to see her until her death and it was shortly afterwards that he moved to the Queens Hotel where Jeff was now Landlord. Sadly Henry also developed Alzheimers and he had to go into a home. He will always be remembered by one member and his wife who used to walk around the village daily. When they passed the Hotel Henry (on most occasions would be there inviting them in to take a 'dram' with him - and he wouldn't take no for an answer! Henry's funeral will be on Monday 15th January at St. Bees Parish Church and it has been kindly requested by the family that the Lodge provide the Bearers.
