Silver Howe & Loughrigg

On the 8th of September, the storm did brew,

The skies were dark, the winds they blew.

But by 9:30 AM, the storm did wane,

And three light blues (Gary, Rick, and Wayne)

Met in good spirits, despite the weather,

With hopes that the day would improve together.

Grasmere, Rydal Water and onto Ambleside was our new course.

Around the lakes we set our course,

Halfway along, the sky turned blue,

We stood by Grasmere, the skies now clear,

And changed our plans without fear.

And Loughrigg beckoned, a climb to pursue.

Up we went, through trees,

We paused at a tree that was so strange and rare,

Then left the woods and took to the air.

The man-made steps rose, one by one,

A rainbow arced one after another all day long!

The weather, though, was fickle, fast,

And warned us all of hazards that could last.

From far below, the ripples on the Mere showed us,

The wind was stirring and rain in shafts was to follow.

Then came the gusts, gravel’s like rain stings your face,

But onward we pressed, as the summit’s trig point was in sight.

At the trig point, we huddled tight,

The winds howled strongly, and the skies grew bright.

We took in views, battling the strong winds to stay upright,

We now understand why Wainwright made this one of his.

But no time to linger, we turned to go down,

The boggy paths below made us choose our path carefully

Through streams in full flow made for sodden feet below.

Down we went, to warmth and cheer,

To the Golden Rule and a well-earned beer.

Though Loughridge’s challenge was made so grand,

The weather made it a different land.

A walk full of excitement, the weather’s full of surprise,

A memory made under ever-changing skies.
