About the Charity
The Cumberland & Westmorland Freemasons’ Charity (213203) provides Provincial Community Grants for charitable purposes. These grants support:
- Masonic and non-Masonic charitable institutions
- Societies and Community Interest Companies (CICs)
- Managed voluntary groups
- Community projects and charitable objects within the Province
- Poor and distressed Brother Masons, their widows and children
- Small/micro groups
The Province covers the boundaries of the former Counties of Cumberland & Westmorland. This document explains eligibility, funding categories and the application process. Please read carefully before completing the form.
Eligibility
Eligible Applicants
Applications are welcome from:
- Registered charities operating within the Province
- Managed voluntary groups (with elected officers, minuted meetings and audited accounts)
- Community Interest Companies (CICs)
- Masonic and non-Masonic organisations
- Projects benefiting communities within Cumberland & Westmorland
- Small/micro groups
Not Eligible
The following are not eligible for Provincial Community Grants:
- Individuals not supported by a registered charity, CIC or managed voluntary/community group
- Organisations or projects outside the Cumberland & Westmorland Province
- Organisations not registered with the Charity Commission (unless managed voluntary groups as defined above)
- Organisations holding unrestricted funds in excess of reasonable requirements
- Nationally organised charities
- Projects primarily funded by statutory bodies
- Animal welfare
- Political objectives
- Medical research
Note: Grants for individuals are administered through other Masonic charities.
Areas of Funding Priority
Provincial Community Grants are principally awarded to projects in the following areas:
- Community Projects
- Disability
- Managed Voluntary Groups
- Self-help Projects
- Vulnerable People
- Children & Youth Opportunities
- Small/micro groups
Categories of Grant
1. Provincial Community Grants
Typically awarded to smaller/medium sized charities or managed voluntary groups. Usually awarded for a specific, defined project.
2. Other or Larger Provincial Community Grants
Applicants may be eligible to apply for larger grants via the Freemason’s Charity (Masonic Charitable Foundation). The Provincial Charity may assist with advice and support. For guidance, contact the Provincial Grants Advisor (details below).
Application Procedure
- Complete this Provincial Community Grant Application Form in full (unless you are a small/micro group which simply doesn’t have the information – just explain as much as you are able to – better to explain why you can’t or don’t have the detail rather than leaving it blank).
- If Applicable – Attach the latest Annual Report and Audited Accounts (mandatory for larger grants).
- Include any supporting documentation relevant to your application.
- If Applicable – Submit a copy of your safeguarding policy (as required).
Organisations awarded grants must provide:
A brief written report (max 50 words) at the outset and conclusion of the project Public acknowledgement of support from Cumberland & Westmorland Freemasons (e.g., website, social media, press, plaque, etc.)

- Public recognition is a condition of funding.
